The man who made Rosemary a babe.

A nice Jewish boy who grew up poor in London, served in the Israeli Army and then came back home to become a hairdresser in order to please his mum, Vidal Sassoon was always kind to women, and he believed the kindest cut of all, in hair at least, was one that freed his female clients from the drudgery of curlers and fuss.  He shot to fame in the sixties, and like much of the rest of sixties fashions, his styles were ideally suited to the young, although he famously said, "Actually short hair is a state of mind ... not a state of age."

Still, the pixie haircut he gave to the then 23-year-old Mia Farrow was devlishly effective in adding to the innocence-violated theme of Rosemary's Baby.  He was flown to Hollywood especially for the task, at a cost of $5,000--a price then considered astronomical.

Sassoon died today at his home on Mullholland Drive; he was 84.  Here's a link to his NY Times obit:  http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2012/05/09/us/ap-us-obit-vidal-sassoon.html?pagewanted=2
