Titanic and dating disasters explained, at last.

It's a mirage, sweetie, the cause of many
Titanically bad dating decisions.
Moonless night.  Human error.  That's the story of the Titanic.  At least the one we've been told.  Now, in the New York Times, two new theories suggest natural contributions to the disaster.  It seems on that night the particular and particularly unusual orbit of the Earth in relation to the sun and moon, "a proximity not equaled in 1,000 years," created a gravitational pull and record high tides that detached icebergs and sent them floating into the shipping lane.  Also, the temperature of the water created "mirages" that caused altered images--of the icebergs to Titanic crew members and the Titanic itself to a nearby ship.

So there it is:  A phase of the moon that sends bad news your way and nighttime mirages that disguise them from you.  That explains so much, doesn't it?
