On this day in 1915, Allied forces launched World War I's Gallipoli Campaign, an ill-fated attempt to capture Istanbul, or as it was still known, Constantinople, a battle in which Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) suffered heavy casualties. In 1981 Peter Weir made a movie inspired by the battle,
Gallipoli, which starred a young Australian actor by the name of Mel Gibson.
